BTEC Engineering

About the course

This BTEC Level 2 qualification is a two-year course (120 credits) studied over Years 10 and 11. You will gain a broad understanding of the engineering sector, developing a range of personal skills and techniques using UTC Plymouth’s industry-standard workshops and equipment.

Overview of units

In Year 1 you will gain an insight into basic engineering principles as well as looking at the design and production processes for an Engineered Product, including Health and Safety and Quality Control processes. Topics covered include:

  • Investigating an Engineering Product
  • The Engineering World

Year 2 includes a practical course based in our industry-standard workshops, where you will get the opportunity to engineer productions from initial design to production. Topics covered include:

  • Machining Techniques
  • The Engineering World

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for starting this course.


You will be assessed through completing coursework and examinations. In Year 10, coursework will be based on ‘Investigating an Engineering Product’ (30 Credits), with an online exam based on ‘The Engineering World’ (30 Credits). In Year 11, your coursework will be on Machining Techniques (60 Credits), with an online exam on ‘The Engineering World’ (30 Credits).

Where you can go next

This course is an excellent foundation for support progression to Level 3 study, in a vocational or academic course. It can lead to an apprenticeship, higher study or a career in a wide variety of areas of engineering, including automotive and electrical.
