Apologies for not publishing for the last few weeks… it has been a whirlwind of activities as we prepare for exams, and in the midst of this we had our first visit from Ofsted.

Exam preparations

As some of our students embark on their exams and take their next steps, I would like to remind parents and carers of the exam study leave arrangements and to ensure that your child is prepared for exams with stationery. Here’s a list of stationery they will need:

  • Black ballpoint pen (s)
  • HB pencil (s)
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • Sharpener
  • Scientific Calculator
  • Compass
  • Protractor
  • Coloured Pencils

We wish all of our students the best of luck with their exams.

Looking ahead to next year

We hope that many of our Year 11 students will return to us in September to start their Sixth Form career. We have created a new curriculum which has been developed in conjunction with our employers. We are really excited to be unveiling this in September. It will allow students to build competencies that will develop their key employability skills. It is different and very much ticks the box for students, whether they are looking towards apprenticeships or higher education courses.

All students starting at the college either in Year 10 or 12 will attend an Induction Day on 4th July in which they will meet their new year group, complete subject pre-assessments and take part in an engineering and employability project.

We are all looking to the future with optimism and enthusiasm – and on that note, I would like to remind you of some of the exciting events that have happened, and developments that we have planned over the coming weeks.

Combined Cadet Force

The launch of the Combined Cadet Force on 10 May was a truly amazing event that really showcased the dedication of staff and students at UTC Plymouth. 19 students were inspected by Commander Bob Fancy, witnessed by our Lord Mayor and a number of Armed Forces personnel together with parents and guests. The Royal Marine Band provided a splendid backdrop to a day which truly made me proud to lead UTC Plymouth. Once again, a thank you to Lieutenant Kerry Eldershaw and Warrant Officer Richard Clements for ensuring the sun shone on our cadets.

Take a look at this brilliant video produced by ForcesTV, which includes a short interview from Cdre Bob Fancy and our very own Siobhan Mackie and Clarissa Mears!

Take a look

Upcoming open evenings

We have two Open Days on 19 May and 16 June. I am sure we will continue to attract students who are looking for a technical based curriculum and college that offers support and care.

New Chair of Governors

I would like to share with you some news regarding our governors. Dr Ruth Weaver has resigned as Chair of our Governing Body. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ruth for all her hard work and dedication to UTC Plymouth since our opening in September 2013.

I would also like to welcome our new chair, Nick Buckland OBE. With a career spanning over 40 years including being Pro Chancellor & former Chair of Governors at the University of Plymouth and Chairman of EDT, which delivers over 30,000 STEM experiences each year, for young people age 11-21 across the UK; we are very proud to have his experience on board.

Thanks again for reading and I hope you all have a fantastic week.
