The sun was shining last Saturday as we embarked on our entry at the 2018 Cardboard Boat Race. Truly great fun with our new sixth formers and their parents!
We were really the talk of the competition with our ‘HMS Smurfette’ entry from Amelia and Charlotte plus “HMS Scottie” from Thomas and Natasha. I think on review, we need to work on lighter entry into the water but fun morning and a big thank you to the teams and their teachers.
Why we are different?
Industry Partner’s Month
Which school gives you a mentor from industry? UTC Plymouth does; so we were really proud this morning when 30 individuals came to our mentor launch. A big thank you to Peter Bragg, Head of Sixth Form and Industry Lead for setting it up, also to our Royal Navy Liaison Officer, Lt. Paul Youngman. It was a great morning with individuals from the Royal Navy, Babcock and MoD sharing their experiences of working in the STEM sector and their route into their present jobs. Students at UTC Plymouth will now meet their assigned mentor over the next few weeks.
Introducing you to a new face working at UTC Plymouth
Jo Ware Lead on English, Literacy and Oracy
Jo Ware has recently joined the UTC Plymouth Team after a career of almost 20 Years at Stoke Damerel Community College. Whilst still employed across both organisations, Jo is thriving on applying her many years of experience in a new educational environment. She is particularly loving delivering GCSE Literature and Language to the new cohort of Year 10 who have already made a flying start.
Education and Credentials
As a former pupil of Devonport High School for Girls, Jo has always had a passion for education and understands the importance achieving a range of qualifications can give for a young person’s future. She has always wanted to teach and is committed to raising aspirations of young people from the South West. Areas of expertise that Jo will bring to UTC Plymouth are firstly in the field of English, Literacy and Oracy. She is taking part in the second year of the ‘Plymouth Oracy Project’ and is committed to providing students with the skills to become confident communicators, a life skill that is priceless.
She has previously been a Head of English and in recent years, an Assistant Vice Principal with responsibility for Reading, Writing, Communication and Maths support, alongside oversight of interventions and Pupil Premium strategies. Jo was absolutely delighted to present at the annual UTC Baker Dearing Conference, back in July, on effective ways to support disadvantaged children. Jo has a Master’s Degree in this area and we are really excited to have her onboard, as she ‘spreads her wings’ for this new career venture.
In college today
Today I observed a fantastic lesson with Year 10 and their teacher Peter Bragg. Students really engaged with the practical design and it was great to see the engagement and skills that our students are learning.
