Pilgrim Primary students STEM presentations to their parents were this week. I was deeply impressed by their ‘oracy’ skills and their incredible enthusiasm! Lots of learning taking place in, what seemed like, an effortless approach by Leigh Hotchin our STEM Lead and Peter Bragg – Careers and Employer Engagement Lead.
It was fantastic to see these year 5 ‘s that are really passionate about being engineers. Destination UTC Plymouth Year 7 in 2020 #aspiration #inspiration #perspiration. Can’t wait!
I think we were all shocked by the footage on the news of a young Syrian boy being bullied at school . Last week we were discussing bullying in our oracy lessons. We all have different tolerance levels but, as a college, we try to ensure that all students understand that we all have different needs at different times of our lives.
‘UTC Plymouth recognises that bullying exists and manages it very well by fast tracking any issues and working with students to ensure there is a positive outcome.’
– Dylan Craven, year 10
With winter storms starting and many of our students travelling from outside Plymouth, just a quick reminder that if you’re running late, please call us so we know where you are. Our amazing Sarah will keep a watch on the trains during days with potential cancellations.
Well done Will in year 10 who came back to college on Monday night after train cancellations to check whether other students may need a ride home as his Mum was coming to collect him – #thoughtful!
Thursday we had a visit from the team from Oceansgate, Marine Business Technology Centre Director Rob Watson, Project Manager Chelsea Parrott and Jodie Williamson, Nina Sarlaka and David Lea from the Enterprise & Inward Investment Department at Plymouth City Council. We had a great meeting and tour and are really looking forward to working in partnership. It’s clear we have the same goals and ethos when it comes to building our pipeline of STEM students.
We have to be cutting edge and stay ahead of the game and Oceansgate is about bringing new innovative businesses to Plymouth. We are working with students who will be on pathways to jobs that don’t even exist yet! #autonomousindustry
Focus on Staff
Head of Sixth Form and Employer engagement/careers
Peter Bragg – who is Pete? Pete has created a brilliant model for our careers and employer engagement as well as inspiring our Sixth formers on to some amazing destinations. Outside of college Pete is can be found paddle boarding on the nearest stretch of water he can find or walking three black labs at unearthly hours of the morning and night! Pete has been with us since 2013 and has clearly seen some changes as part of our change team and extended SLT.
