Principals Blog, Week 21 of 2019
As I looked out of my window this week, I see the return of Brittany Ferries. This only means one thing! Spring is nearly here.
With that in mind, we are working on sprucing up our spaces ready for our new cohorts in September!
If any parents/carers are interested in helping out with ‘Spring Cleaning’ at any time the week of May 13th – 17th please get in contact! Free Lunch provided.
Helen Johnston visit to Leigh UTC
Helen, one of my VP’s, dedicated her time this week to researching for our curriculum development. Tuesday was a visit to Leigh UTC (thanks Carina and Steve for their hospitality) also big thank you to DHSB Head Teacher, Dan Roberts who accompanied Helen on the visit.
The Leigh UTC are following a curriculum from the Middle Years IB programme and, after Helen visited plus a whole day at the IB conference in London, she was convinced that this was the right route for us! We are excited to find out more and will keep you posted.
Jo Ware visit to Devonport Dockyard with Marlborough primary
Lovely to see Marlborough Primary enjoy their visit as part of their STEM Project with UTC Plymouth. This is the culmination of all their hard work to see STEM in action! Great job Leigh and Pete for all your hard work!
The college is investing much of our staff CPD time to developing our Visible Learning Strategies. This week we have some examples of students learning and staff learning walk discussions. It is a real pleasure listening to students discussing learning and wanting to make progress. Brings a tear to my eye!
It’s great to hear comments from our students; ‘Learning at UTC is personalised’, ‘hard work and getting your homework completed is rewarded’, ‘learning is more engaging and exciting’, ‘you are treated like a young professional adult’. Next term we will be working on a joint CPD with our students to find out how we can learn and study better.

Surfers against sewerage briefing
Today we welcomed Hugo Brown from Surfers against Sewage to talk to our students about becoming a plastic free school. We are really excited to participate in this project and are looking forward to some great ideas from our students.
Jess, our Kitchen Manager, is already running down supplies and every student can pick up their UTC reusable water bottle. If you are interested in becoming a plastic free school, check out this website.
Jo and Jason have been busy setting up our e-book library and will be launching to students very soon. More on this after half term!
College Improvement Group
Our Student Improvement Group will be making some changes after half term, but I wanted to share with you results from Plymouth City youth parliament that our students voted in.
Food at UTC Plymouth
The food is just getting better and better as our amazing Kitchen Manger Jess is starting to add her creative twist to our menus. Pictures below healthy chicken fajitas! Any ideas for the menu please see Jess!
This is Luis Broadway – this week he received the highest Student Behaviour score this week – this is something that we are all very proud of indeed. Well done Luis, keep it up!
