Blog Week 24
I have to say that it has been so busy with careers, apprenticeship fair and the skills show this week that I actually didn’t realise that the whole ‘Brexit’ thing ramped up! A great distraction, but the amount of time and energy spent on this reminds me every day of our need to invest in our young people. So after that little reflection on a big subject I will move on to what we have been up to this week at our brilliant college!

PMG Fair last Saturday drew over 1000 young people and their families. Lovely to see young apprentice awards at the start and the employers were really pleased to see so many UTC Plymouth students finding out about the apprenticeship offers across the city. A big well done to all our students who attended. We met many Year 11 students and we hope to see them at our Open Day on 23rd March 2019.

Next on the agenda was the SW Skills show at Plymouth Pavilions. Our stand was quite the attraction with retro X Box and Super Mario games to play on. Once again on Tuesday night, over 1000 young people attended to see what is on offer across the city.

Our new Safeguarding Team
This week saw lots of staff out on training for Safeguarding. This is because we are developing a new team and I am really pleased to say what a great team this is. I believe we will grow in strength as we ensure that our practice is excellent!

Developing our Curriculum
Today Helen and Jo, my VP’s, have been working with Mike Peters, from our amazing Trust Reach South, developing our new KS3 curriculum. With a background in education, Michael has managed public sector organisations with over 800 staff and budgets in excess of £300m. He has successfully worked on establishing new unitary authorities and has led organisations to successful inspection outcomes and achievement of major contracts. He has successful experience in leading and supporting change and implementation of performance and commercialisation of education and children’s services. We are really fortunate to get such great support from experienced individuals in our trust!

Science Briefing
Plymouth Marine Labs (PML) presenting about plastic product life-cycles and the impact on marine ecosystems, food webs and subsequently micro-plastics in our food. We’re using this to launch a project on awareness of micro-plastics, sources of pollution and ways of tackling this (including our responsibility in design and manufacture as well as developing technologies to reduce plastics entering the environment and clean up what is already there). Great job and look out for our beach clean-up later on in the year!

Getting ready for our Open Day
One week to go until UTC Plymouth opens the roller shutter doors for another Open Day. Breakfast baps at the ready as we showcase what it is like to study at UTC Plymouth. Well the answer is amazing, bespoke, nurturing, professional, enlightening but please come and see for yourself don’t just take my word for it! I am totally passionate about what we offer and wish more young people could see the benefits of our alternative education model.

Final update – from Brexit to puppy – only a month away before we pick up our little boy and we were really excited to see the lovely IG on Crufts this week. He even has his own Instagram account!
