Welcome back to a new school year and to many new initiatives at UTC Plymouth. For new students and parents we have added a’ What’s on’ feature on the key information pages of our website which will keep you up to date with activities, meetings, visits and our weekly themes, so please do keep checking it for updates.
Good News Stories
We celebrated with Year 11 and Year 13 this summer when the Exam results were announced in August. Some subject areas enjoyed excellent results –In BTEC Engineering we secured a 100% pass rate.
All of our Year 13 students progressed on to Higher Level Apprenticeships, Employment or University. In particular Mohammed (Mo) Mahmoud who arrived in the UK from Somalia with very little English, he gained a Level 3 BTEC equivalent of 3 B’s and has now secured a place on a Mechanical Engineering Degree Course at Plymouth University. He is over the moon and said he is so grateful to all the staff at UTC. He wrote this email to Pete Bragg, Head of Key Stage 5.
So many thanks for all of the support and help that you and everyone else at UTC did with me. Going to UTC was the most amazing experience in my life. I really grateful of everything and now the hard work is just about to start, but definitely I will keep it up xx
It’s also good to see many of our Year 11’s returning to Sixth Form at UTC Plymouth in particular congratulations to George Modica – Cliff who gained 3 A * and 4 A’s in his GCSE results and is now on our academic route studying A Level Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
As one year group leaves, another takes it’s place. On Monday we welcomed our ‘New’ Year 10 (Protector) and new Year 12 (Enterprise) who seem to have had a very good start to their career at UTC Plymouth. Our Year 10 students visited HMS Sunderland this week as part of our iENG Royal Navy project. Thank you to Chief Petty Officer Mark Lewis who escorted our students on their visits. He commented on how impressed he was with students’ behaviour and attitudes!
This year we are starting with a whole college literacy initiative D.E.A.R – which stands for ‘Drop Everything and Read’. Several times a week students and all staff get their books, phones or kindles out to read. Please could you encourage your son or daughter to make sure they have a book they can read on these occasions. We are also looking to increase our library size and if you have books you no longer read that are suitable for age 14 to 19 please bring them to reception and we will find them a home.
Sixth Form Paid Positions
I have today announced Sixth Form job vacancies as Recreation Assistants at break and lunchtime. These should go live on our website and students can apply online.

Andy McCarron – I’m a Toxicologist who has recently left KEVICC in Totnes to join UTC. I became a Science Technician 4 years ago and have loved every moment of it. I really enjoy being involved in practical lessons encouraging and challenging students to unlock the knowledge they have, making them interested in science. I’m also an ex chef so really enjoy cooking, and I love to garden which includes growing my own food.
Ryan Searle – I am a Business Studies student who has joined the UTC on a year- long placement from Plymouth University. I cannot wait to begin to develop my skills here at UTC and gain some invaluable experience. I will be in charge of marketing for the college and I am very excited for the year ahead.
Harry Green – After graduating from my PGCE (School direct) course last year I am pleased to say that I have joined the Mathematics department at UTC Plymouth for my NQT year. I am excited for this journey ahead, I will relish all opportunities and take every challenge head on. I am looking forward to my future at UTC.
Harry, Ryan and Andy.
Finally, thank you to all parents and students who have supported us with our new uniform policy. It is much appreciated and great to see our students looking so smart and professional. We now have a stock of the navy ties that can be purchased for £5.50 from Reception.
