UTC Plymouth this morning hosted an Employer Breakfast at it’s site, inviting local organisations onto it’s premises showcase opportunities to the ambitious and promising Engineering students. The Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence, Princess Yachts and Babcock were among the prestigious organisations who were able to offer professional opportunities to all UTC’s students.
The Year 11 to Year 13 students spent the morning networking to find out what was on offer from the wide range of opportunities with the Defence, Automotive, Marine and Manufacturing arenas of Engineering. The opportunities include apprenticeships, higher education and careers within the huge field of engineering throughout Devon and Cornwall.
Gareth Grech and Annabell Mears, both sixth-form engineering students were keen to express what they got from the morning. Gareth said; “it’s been a really good morning and you get to speak with local manufacturers and employers to get a potential kick start to your career.” Annabell said “I personally got a first hand view of what some employers want from potential employees and get some valuable face time with the companies that you want to work with in the future”.
Peter Bragg, UTC’s Careers and Employer Engagement Lead said “our Employers are essential to engage with our Engineers of the Future to input on the curriculum, offer work placements, support the recruitment process and ultimately offer our students a career within engineering. We hugely appreciate all the support that has been given to us by our fantastic employers and Plymouth has a fantastic range of engineering opportunities for young people and it is amazing to see such networking opportunities develop and ignite engineering passion into our students”.
Young people and parents who would like to discover more about what UTC offers to students are encouraged to attend the college’s Open Day on Saturday 24th March. Running from 10am until 2pm, this free event will feature a range of fascinating STEM experiments and workshops. It will also give attendees a chance to sample the UTC’s industry-standard facilities and to talk to staff and current students. Click here to book your place.
