Kaye R

Junior Web Developer at Positive Purchasing

Since leaving UTC with a BTEC, I started my degree at Plymouth University studying Digital Media Design. I’ve finished my second year and now I’m on a 15 month internship. I will finish my final year after my contract ends - I’m hoping (and almost guaranteed) to get offered a place after I get my degree at the end of my final year. My internship is at Positive Purchasing as their Junior Web Developer - it’s an amazing company and I’m very happy.

In the next five years I’m hoping to work my way towards becoming a Full Stack Web Developer and become confident in back-end web development. UTC has a great student-teacher dynamic which made it very easy to learn and maintain an anxiety-free environment. I appreciated how the teachers made it feel like a family.

Amelia B

Fabrication Apprentice at Babcock

So far I’m halfway through my second year as a fabrication apprentice at Babcock International. I’ve completed different placements throughout the dockyard undertaking different forms of fabrication, such as outfitting and general factory work making parts for projects.

I am currently in the factory completing pattern development for my apprenticeship qualification while also completing jobs on the side for projects.

In the next 5 years I would’ve finished my apprenticeship and I am possibly going to then move onto the higher apprenticeship and get into Non Destructive Testing to work my way up the ladder. My main personal aim in 5 years would be to have my own house.

UTC has helped me in my career in many ways, for example confidence and ambition. However, UTC also helped me decide which trade I wanted to go into after experiencing the different engineering trades within my BTEC. UTC also helped me gain so much engineering experience through general units I completed and also work experience. I made great memories there, including the France trip and learnt so much from all my teachers.

Charlotte H

Marine Engineer Apprentice at Princess Yachts

I’m currently a second year apprentice at Princess Yachts. I’m a marine engineer apprentice at south yard where the X95 yachts are manufactured. In the Next five years I would have hoped to have finished my apprenticeship and I would love to go travelling and see some of the world. I’m happy to talk to students and be featured on the website/ social media.

Matthew S

Degree Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at Belfour Beatty

After I left UTC Plymouth, I joined Derriford as a Clinical Engineer from December 2019 to August 2020. Following that, I started my current role as a Degree Apprentice Quantity Surveyor for Belfour Beatty. My role is predominantly based in Plymouth at the moment, however I was given the chance to go up to the lake district for a week for team building challenges with other apprentices.

UTC has helped me a lot, as I was able to secure jobs with Belfour Beatty, since the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering course I studied was exactly what the employer was looking for. I was able to experience lots of different theoretical and practical situations that allowed me to be confident during the application process.

In the next 5 years I hope to be a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor.

Harrison R

Observer at Royal Navy

When I left there I joined the navy, initially starting at BRNC Dartmouth and since then I have worked with many different units and squadrons. I am currently on 824 Naval Air Squadron based at Culdrose near Helston. 824 is the Merlin MK2 training squadron, here I'm training to be an Observer. As an observer I sit just behind the cockpit and will work with the pilot and aircrewman to coordinate different missions. The Merlin is capable of anti submarine warfare and airborne early warning. I still have just under a year left on 824 until I'm fully qualified, in total the training has been about 5 1/2 years. In 5 years time I will be on a front line squadron with the chance to operate from the QE class aircraft carriers or Type 23 frigates.

UTC helped me join the navy in the first place, throughout my time at the college we had plenty of visits and opportunities to engage with the navy and this played a part in my decision to join up.
