GCSE English Language

About the course

This GCSE course develops students’ ability to use and understand the English language effectively through reading a range of texts, plus working on exercises in different writing techniques and spoken English. The qualification is assessed through two external examinations. Alongside this, a separate endorsed assessment of students’ ability to communicate is also undertaken through a speaking and listening task.

Overview of units

Paper 1: One literature fiction text from 20th or 21st Century.
Extended writing question (fiction)

Paper 2: One non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text. One from 19th Century and one from 20th or 21st Century.
Extended writing question (non-fiction)

Oracy

Embedded within our English curriculum, every week our students are given the opportunity to develop vital Oracy skills - an important skill which has been identified and recognised as an asset amongst our partner industries and synonymous with success and progression within career development.


Assessment

You will be assessed by sitting two written examinations, one of 1 hour and 45 minutes and another of 2 hours. Each includes writing and reading tasks. There is also a Spoken Language element of the qualification, but this will not form part of your final mark and grade. Grades are reported from 9-1, with the communication element being reported in brackets after the grade at either Pass, Merit or Distinction.
